PURPOSE
To describe the procedure for
cleaning the glassware in the Quality control lab.

SCOPE
This procedure is applicable to glassware in Quality
Control department, , Unit-V.

PROCEDURE
1.0 After completion of the analysis, QC chemist
should set aside the used glassware
and inform for washing.
2.0 While transferring and cleaning, proper
care should be taken to avoid breakage.
3.0 Collect the glassware which is to be
cleaned, in a plastic tub and transfer to washing
area.
4.0 Clean the used glassware with tap water.
5.0 Soak the glassware in 1% neutral pH soap
solution for 10 to 15 minutes.
6.0 To remove persistent impurities, use
suitable solvent.
7.0 Rinse with tap water, if glassware is
not clean repeat step 5.0 and 6.0.
8.0 Finally, rinse the glassware with
purified water.
9.0 Drain the water and keep the glassware
for drying in the oven below 70°C (avoid drying
in the
oven for a longer time).

After drying, remove the glassware from oven and store
in respective areas (do not use
the glassware until it reaches the room temperature).

Gooch
crucible
11.1
Fill the Gooch
crucible with 10% Nitric acid and soak for sufficient period of
time.
11.2
Rinse with
plenty of tap water.
11.3
Apply vacuum and wash the crucible with tap water.
11.4
Rinse 3 to 4 times with purified water and keep it in
drier.

Silica and platinum crucible
12.1
Rinse the crucible with 10% nitric acid and then with
tap water.
12.2
Again, rinse three to four times with purified water.
12.3
Ignite the crucible at 700°C temperature in a muffle
furnace.

Switch off the muffle furnace.
12.5
Before taking out the crucible from muffle furnace,
ensure that the temperature
is below 100° C.
12.6
Take out the crucible and place it in the desiccator
immediately.
