SOP FOR OPERATION OF FIRE EXTINGUSHERS

I.                   PURPOSE
The purpose of this SOP is to provide operating procedure for the fire                                                   extinguishers to extinguish the fire.
II.                SCOPE
The procedure is applicable for Fire Extinguishers in…….
III.             RESPONSIBILITY
Safety department, User department, Security department.
IV.             ACCOUNTABILITY
Head – Safety and Environment
V.                PROCEDURE:
1.0          Fire is classified into four types based on fuel.
1.1              Class A Fire : All solid fires
1.2              Class B Fire :  All liquid fires
1.3              Class C Fire :  All gas fires
1.4              Class D Fire  : All metal fires
2.0          Fires should be extinguished by using the different extinguishers as follows
2.1    Class A fire – Mechanical foam type extinguishers.
2.2     Class B fire - Foam, dry powder and carbon dioxide extinguishers.
2.3    Class C fire - Dry powder and carbon dioxide extinguishers.
2.4          Class D fire - Extinguisher with special dry powder metal fires.
3.0          Operating procedure
3.1      Dry Chemical Powder type
3.1.1        ‘Squeeze grip nozzle type dry chemical powder fire extinguisher’ (5 kg / 10kg/22.5kg.capacity.
3.1.1.1            Take the extinguisher and be about 5 to 8 feet away from    the fire and be on upwind side of the fire. Remove safety          clip of the extinguisher.
3.1.1.2            Hold the squeeze grip nozzle in one hand and direct it          towards the fire.
3.1.1.3            Strike the knob with the other hand.
3.1.1.4            Press the squeeze grip nozzle and direct the powder near      the seat of the fire.
3.1.1.5            Progress forward, moving the nozzle rapidly with a side to  side sweeping motion as the pressure drops.
3.1.1.6            Fight the fire till the flame disappears or in the case           extinguisher becomes empty, use another extinguisher.
3.2      Foam type
3.2.1        Take the extinguisher and be about  5 to 10 feet away from the fire.
3.2.2        Be on the upwind side of the fire, remove the safety clip.
3.2.3        Hold the hose pipe with foam dispersing nozzle of the extinguisher with hand.
3.2.4        Strike the knob with the other hand.
3.3.5      When pressure gets developed ( 30 to 45 seconds)within the cylinder and                                                 direct jet at the far inside edge of container or object such that it spreads                                                      evenly and forms foam blanket on burning liquid.
3.3.6      If possible, gradually approach fire as the pressure of extinguisher drops.
3.3.7      Fight the fire till the flame disappears or in case extinguisher becomes                                                       empty, use another extinguisher.
Note:   Do not direct the jet directly into liquid because that will                                                               drive the foam beneath the surface and render ineffective.  In addition,                                                it may splash burning liquid on to the surrounding and spread the fire.
                        3.4     Carbon dioxide type
3.4.1      Take the extinguisher and be about 5 to 8 feet away from                                                                          the fire.
3.4.2      Be on the upwind side of the fire.
3.4.3      Remove the safety pin, if provided.
3.4.4      Hold the horn in one hand and direct it towards the fire with the other hand, turn                                          the valve in anti-clockwise direction in order to get required pressure                                                                      and jet       length.
3.4.5      Carry extinguisher with the help of handle, direct the jet at the base of fire                                                               and operate in sweeping motion.  Proceed towards the fire and be as close as                                                       possible to the fire.
3.4.6        Fight the fire till the flame disappears or extinguisher becomes empty.
Note: Most suitable on indoor fires and on fires in electrical equipment. If                            horn is of metal type, then do not use the same extinguisher on electrically               live equipment or cable or electrical fire.  Ventilate the area after use. In                      case of major fire, hydrant system can be operated by safety squad.
