SOP FOR SPILLAGE OF GROWTH CONTAINING SOLID OR LIQUID MEDIA

I           PURPOSE

             To describe the procedure for spillage of growth containing solid or liquid media

II         SCOPE

             This procedure is applicable to Microbiology lab…..

III.       RESPONSIBILITY

             Assistant - Microbiologist.

V       PROCEDURE

1.0        Care must be taken to avoid the spillage of the growth containing media or any positive cultures       in the microbiology lab.

2.0        If any spillage of such growth containing media occurs in the lab due to mishandling the      following  precautions must be taken.

2.1       Wear hand gloves and nose mask..

2.2       First spray the spillage area with filtered 70% isopropyl alcohol or any other             disinfectant and leave it for at least 10 minutes.

2.3        Then mop the whole area with the duster soaked in the disinfectant.

2.4        Decontaminate the spills as per SOP PMB 002

2.5        Disinfect the hands after cleaning of spillage.
